Mark's gospel begins with the assertion that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah/Saviour) and the Son of God. Here in the middle of the gospel, the first human person finally believes that Jesus is the Messiah. For this God given insight, Jesus changes Simon's name to Peter (Rock) upon which He will build His Church.
Who is Jesus?
From the very start of the gospel you are told the answer, "The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (Mk 1:1). The word Christ means Messiah (the Jewish term) or Saviour in English. We know this, but the charaters in the story don't know this. We know the secret. They have to work it out for themselves and they are pretty slow at getting there.
We start this section with a healing miracle - coming to physical sight.
